October Wine Features

October is the month for time around the fire, braised meats, and slow cooked soups. As we savor the flavors of Autumn through our Upcoming Wine Dinner, we also enjoy two new wines – Domaine Vincent Dampt Cote de Lechet Chablis and Elisabetta Foradori’s Ampeleia “Ampeleia” from Maremma. Both will captivate your palate alongside a variety of cuisine prepared by Luci Chefs.

Domaine Vincent Dampt Cote de Lechet Chablis 2012 | $10 / glass   $45/bottle

France  |  Burgundy  |  Chablis & Auxerrois

Real, high-quality Chablis is a balm to the soul…unadorned, unbejewelled, in a white wine world where alcohol and oak are too much ascendant…Chablis prides itself on minerality. This wine demonstrates what the word means.  -Oz Clark on the 2011 Domaine Vincent Dampt

The Dampt family has a long tradition of winemakers, in fact both Vincent’s father, Daniel Dampt, and grandfather, Jean Defaix, own highly-regarded estates in Chablis. Vincent grew up in the world of wine and decided to follow the family tradition when he was just 14 by enrolling himself in wine school in Beaune.

In 2002 Vincent began working with his father as winemaker, and in 2004 inherited a few small plots of vineyards, enabling him to create his own estate and make wines under his own name.  Dampt’s approach is sustainable. The vines are 35 years old and yields are kept very low; both factors are held to bring great complexity to the wines.

Fermentation is in stainless steel tanks.  Malolactic fermentation is carried out in order to soften the wine’s naturally high acidity. The 100% Chardonnay vines, raised at the low production volume of 5,500 vines/hectare, ensures smaller yields of great quality. Practicing sustainable methods, this Chablis is fresh in mouth with a nutty tone on the nose. Layers of flavor exhibit the chameleon character Chablis is known for while offering the illusion of oak despite its stainless fermentation. Very enjoyable to those seeking a wine rich in texture, viscosity of slight oil without being too slippery. Perfect with seafoods, especially lobster and shellfish, and light rich chicken dishes.

Recommended with Luci’s Spaghetti con Cozze/Vongole, Pollo Arrosto, Fettuccine con Salmone, and Papardelle con Aragosta.

Elizabetta Foradori Ampeleia “Ampeleia” Blend 2010 | $14 / glass | $70 / bottle

Elizabetta Foradori is one of Italy’s premier “rock star” status female winemakers that we delight in supporting. Her method of Amphora fermentation calling back to the days of antiquity illustrates what is possible in modern winemaking. Her Foradori estate was her first and one of great philosophy, care, and intrigue for those seeking wines of unique character and excellent quality. Ampeleia is a new chapter for Elizabetta and although different than her solo project at Foradori, is delicious and daring in much the same way that we have come to know and love such wines as Granato and the retired Mytro.

From Ampeleia
“Ampeleia is born from the synergistic blend of different grape varieties sourced in vineyards found on the hillsides dominated by the town of Roccatederighi, in the heart of Maremma. It embodies this land from the chestnut woods on higher ground, through the Mediterranean scrubland, to the lower fields with cork-oak woods. Six grape varieties are blended in this wine aspiring to represent the Mediterranean tradition of cultivating diversity. ”

“Each vineyard (at Ampleleia)  has a distinctive identity that is enhanced by the uniqueness of the surrounding environment. Hence, variety is the keystone and soul of Ampeleia. In fact, variety represents the project’s constant quality, both physically and symbolically, and is harmoniously expressed in its wines that taste of the diverse and varied land of Roccatederighi.”

Aged 16 months in wood or cement tanks followed by 12 months of bottle-ageing, the Ampeleia blend showcases the quality of the vines and grapes grown at the Maremma estate. With wonderful gripping tannins and youthful expression of fruit, Ampeleia’s blend offers reminiscent flavors of black walnut alongside a rich textural experience calling for braised meats, especially wild game, pork belly, and cream based dishes.

Enjoy with Luci’s Arrosto di Maiale, Costine di Manzo Brasato, Risotto con Funghi, and Belgian Chocolate Flourless Torte

July Wine Features

Triade Bianco della Campania 2012
Italy | Campania $6/Glass $27/Bottle

Produced from 1/3 each of Fiano, Falanghina, and Greco, this white is crisp with rich tropical fruit and vanilla aromas. The three grapes are vinified separately using the same technique and are then blended to create a white wine that pairs beautifully with white meats, fish, and lighter style pastas.

At Luci Restaurants, enjoy with Scampi, Pappardelle con Aragosta,
Spaghetti con Aglio, Pollo Brasato, and Alaskan Dayboat Halibut

GD Vajra Langhe Rosso 2011
Italy | Piedmont $8/Glass $36/Bottle

“The most exciting soccer game is when every player contributes, with their own skills and talents. This is why I think of a soccer team when I think of Langhe Rosso! Nebbiolo, like the captain, stands out for its structure and persuasive elegance. Barbera (left wing) brings freshness and personality to the blend, while Dolcetto supports the team on the defence, with its reliable structure. Freisa, like the striker, never gives up and always makes his statement on the the field. Finally we have Albarossa, the goalkeeper, who sometimes goes unnoticed but is one we couldn’t do without. And then the Pinot, attacking midfielder: agile and quick, the true expert of dribbling, brings the adrenaline to the game with class. Together they form the perfect blend.” – Guiesseppe Vajra

At Luci Restaurants, enjoy with Seasonal Ravioli, Risotto con Funghi,
Arrosto di Maiale, Seasonal Rich Fish, and Belgian Chocolate Flourless Torte

May Featured Wines

May Wine Features

Join the Smith Family & Luci Staff throughout the month of May as we tour the Veneto!

Pieropan Soave Classico 2012     $6/glass    $27/bottle

Italy | Veneto | Verona | Soave

A few miles east of Verona, enclosed by the original town walls and dominated by its medieval fortress, the ancient commune of Soave has a peaceful, timeless quality about it. In the heart of the old town is the home of the Pieropans, the historical Palazzo Pullici, built in 1460 and purchased by the village doctor and amateur winemaker, Leonildo Pieropan, Senior, in 1890. Leonildo, Sr. obviously had a genius for the winery: his cantina not only thrived, but its founder even ‘invented’ Recioto di Soave. Today his grandson, Leonildo (“Nino”) Pieropan, flanked by his wife, Teresita, and sons, Andrea and Dario, are showing the world just how great Soave can be in the right hands.

This classic DOC Soave Classico is comprised of 85% Garganega and 15% Trebbiano di Soave from southerly exposed hillside vineyards. The wine matures in glass lined cement vats and rest at least one month in the bottle before release. Brilliant straw yellow, ample, delicate nose of almond and cherry blossoms, elderberries and lilies of the valley; complex and structured on the palate, with good acidity, silky texture, almondy finish. At Luci Restaurants: Great with Fresh Mozzarella, Pesto, and Scallops.

Ca’Rugate “Rio Albo” Valpolicella 2012       $8/glass     $36/bottle

Italy | Veneto | Alberedo d’Adige

The viticulture story of the Tessari family began in the early 1900’s when Amedeo Tessari, rented an osteria in a small area of Albaredo d’Adige. After Amedeo’s passing on the day of the 1918 armistice, Amedeo’s wife, Donna Adele raised their children until the 1930’s when their son Fulvio, known asBeo” took over the family’s business. Fulvio continued his father’s plans, focusing on viticulture, purchasing the most prestigious vineyards of Rugate, making wine and selling their grapes. In the 1970’s. Fulvio decided to improve upon this foundation and formed Azienda Agricola TessariFulvio, the estate preceeding Ca’Rugate. With his son, Amedeo, the family lands were brought together in the “fermentation years,” distilling the wine making practices and crossing national borders with only Garganega production.

In 2001, Michele began carrying on as the fourth generation of grape growers. The Tessaris made the decision to build a new, larger and technologically advanced cellar. In the same year, the family decided to invest their experience in the Valpolicella area by purchasing the first vineyards in the hilly zone of Montecchia di Crosara.

This Valpolicella marks the beginning of a new chapter for Ca’Rugate with the Rio Albo offering 40% Corvina , 30% Rondinella, 30% Corvinone. Fermented on the skins for a period of 7 to 10 days and matured in stainless steel tanks, this ruby red brings a bouquet of blackberry and cherries to a supple palate with light tannins and plenty of flavour. Ideal with grilled or roast chicken and pork and delicious with tasty hard cheeses. At Luci Restaurants Beautiful with our Duroc Pork, Daily Fish, and Polenta.
