Malvira Favorita 2012
Italy | Piedmont | Langhe $6/Glass | $27/Bottle
Malvira is a familiar name around the Luci Corner these days. The work of the Domante Brothers, Massimo and Roberto, asks the question – What is Arneis capabale of ? With oak aging of this Piemontese grape, the Domante Brothers engage palates in ways that extend the wine experience – giving the opportunity to refine and frame the range a varietal’s tasting and aromatic profile can exhibit. This is no different with their 100% Favorita or Vermentino (as its known to those outside of Piedmont). We are delighted for this autumn selection with an approachable price that lends itself well to those who enjoy the acidity of Pinot Grigio or the body of Chardonnay.
This 100% Favorita (Vermentino) is a prime example of the wonderful flavors available to white wines raised in Piedmont. Aged 4-8 months in stainless steel tanks, the full expression of Favorita shows in the extraction of full of fruit on the palate. Enjoy pineapple, fresh fruits and white flowers on the nose as you sip the straw yellow elixir with golden tints. Filled with fruit and freshness, the slight bitter end makes for wonderful pairing with fresh cheeses (think Luci’s fresh Mozzarella or Ricotta), light appetizers, mixed green salads, and delicate white fish.
G.D. Vaira 2009
Italy | Piedmont | Langhe $10/Glass | $45/Bottle
As many of you know – Giuseppe Vaira is one of our favorite producers. His artistic philosophy to winemaking is inspiring and his wines offer a glimpse into the gentle care he takes to create wines of lasting quality and value. We are pleased to offer this 100% Nebbiolo at such a great price of enduring quality. So popular, we were nearly oversold over the weekend. This is a wine not to be missed and can be cellared for decades to come – one of the many reasons we love Nebbiolo.
“This wine is a photograph of Nebbiolo. It is Nebbiolo! It shares the structure, perfumes and elegance of a Barolo, but with grace and flair holds your hand and accompanies you for the whole meal.” ~ Giuseppe Vaira, Winemaker at G.D. Vaira
Harvesting of Nebbiolo takes place in the first half of October. Grape picking and the transporting of the grapes in small crates, are done manually to keep the greapes intact. The careful selection of grape clusters starts in the vineyard and is carried out with the same attention the way to the cellar. Fermentation lasts approximately 15 days, the spends six months in stainless steel vats (with a minimum share of oak). It is then ready for bottling. Ruby red, delicate, and at times transparent, this 100% Nebbiolo is intense, with expressive aromoas of violets and withered roses layered over with small red berry notes. Silky tannins envelop the palate with personality and vivacious energy. Pairing beautifully with Luci’s Braised Beef Shortribs, Housemade Ravioli,
