Fontaleoni Vernaccia 2011

Italy | Chianti | San Gimignano

“Fontaleoni is one of the elite producers in this zone, devoting much time and energy to Vernaccia, and making very good reds.” – International Wine Cellar Jul/Aug 07

Azienda Agricola Fontaleoni is a small estate whose vineyards are located at 200 meters above sea level, the ideal altitude for growing the Vernaccia varietal. It was established in 1959 when the Troiani family, vignerons for generations, moved to Tuscany. Restructured in the nineties, the cellar was renovated and new vineyards were planted in order to produce high-quality wines. To have modern and sophisticated equipment is particularly important for Vernaccia, as this grape has a delicate nature and a very very fragile skin that breaks easily when reaching full ripeness. Low yields of grapes, careful harvest and pressing of this fragile grape, and conscientious winemaking, have produced Vernaccia wines that continue to grow in quality and fame every year since the first bottling in 1994.

Fontaleoni-Vernaccia-Label

Veritable in its expression, Vernaccia can showcase a wide range of flavors, but one trait all Vernaccia possesses is a crisp acidity that the painter Michelangelo said, “…kisses, licks, bites, pinches and stings” with a subtle, pleasant finish often described as green almond. This 100% Vernaccia offers white peach, floral fruit on the nose with medium body and a dry, fresh finish. Paired beautifully with seafoods (mussels in particular), soft cheeses, and cream based sauces.

Castel Vecchio Orme in Rosso 2009
Italy | Firenze | San Casciano Val di Pesa

The Castelvecchio farm is in San Pancrazio in the municipality of San Casciano Val di Pesa, 20 km from Florence, in Chianti DOCG. Since 1960 the farm has worked 73 hectares of land, 30 of which are vineyards, and 15 are dedicated to olive groves. Historically, Castelvecchio was one of the most important holdings of the Cavalcanti family. The name of the property can be seen on a parchment from 1189, making note of a real estate transaction, and in which reference is made to a CastelVecchio (or Old Castle) in Val di Pesa. The building traces the variable fortunes of the Cavalcanti family until the battle of Monteaperti, where CastelVecchio was razed to the ground. In the 15th century, almost directly on top of the ruins, the present villa was built. Later abandoned, the house fell into disrepair where it languished as a simple farmhouse forgotten in the midst of a thick wood. In 1960, Renzo Rocchi properly restored the villa to its former elegance replete with the dignified air, becoming a Manor Estate. Though it was in a spirit of lightheartedness that the wine cellars were built and the vineyards planted, its resurrection stemmed from a love and passion for the country-side.

ORME2007

This wine is produced from a 50% blend of traditional Sangiovese with 30% Merlot and 20% Petit Verdot cultivated in CastelVecchio’s vineyards. Ageing of 12 months takes place in French oak barriques with further refinement in bottle. The first vintage presented was 2007. The label, with distinguishing red lines remind one of the Tuscan landscape ~ 3 hills in sequences and also the three generations producing this wine. Offering rich berry flavors, mild tannin, and balance – enjoy with grilled or roasted red meats.

Matteo Correggia Arneis 2012
Italy | Piedmont | Roero | Canale d’Alba

“When Matteo Correggia inherited his father’s estate in 1985, the wine-growing boom was a long way off, and farmers on the left bank of the river Tanaro grew fruit and vegetables alongside vines that were used for making wine for a few close friends.

Matteo was a young farmer who was very keen on wine growing. He decided that his project was simple and for this reason, he would not give up.

With grapes produced in over 20 hectares of vineyards and managed personally, the Matteo Correggia Concern produces a wide range of wines. The wines are naturally the products of the ground where grapevines put down their roots: sandy ground that has little clay or silt and is very loose and therefore extremely suitable to produce rich and refined bouquets.”

roero_arneis_matteo_correggia

The Arneis produced here is of exceptional quality. Bright and bracing, yet full of minerality and lush fruit. This Arneis has a long lees (6 months). Giving it vivaciousness and depth. With notes of stone fruit, lemon, and citrus peel, this Arneis is suitable as an aperitif, beautiful with seafoods or alongside fresh cheeses and light appetizers.

“The Correggia winery continues to set the pace for other wineries in the area, providing topics for discussion and food for thought. This is the way of things ever since the much-mourned Matteo showed just how much potential there was in an apparently marginal area. Today, Ornella and her exceptional staff is a champion of sustainable viticulture. Correggia’s natural approach means working the land in the full awareness of the surrounding environment. It’s another field in which Correggia is leading the way, sensibly and without ostentation.” – Gambero Rosso Italian Wines 2009

GD Vajra “Kye” Freisa 2009

Italy| Piedmont | Barolo

“We produce Barolo and the wines of our beloved land. We believe in Beauty, craftsmanship, attention to detail, and creativity with respect for tradition. As a family-run winery, we are artisans, working together with a young team who embraces our same passion and enthusiasm. We work the vineyards because it is the foundation for quality without compromise, but most of all because we love doing it! Our wines are elegant, complex and delicate. They have the personality and identity that we like to find in every glass on our table. ”

kye freisa

Freisa, is a lesser known variety in spite of its close and ancient relationship to Nebbiolo. A history which has no rival when compared to more productive and easier varieties to grow. With its strong personality, Langhe DOC Freisa Kyè pays tribute to this noble variety cultivated in Langa.  The optimal moment for harvesting Freisa is constituted by alternating warm Autumn days and cool nights: generally during the second half of October. The destemming and elimination of the most acidic parts along with the greenest tannins, is an essential practice for this variety. The rather long fermentation process allows the grape tannins to transmigrate into the wine. For this quite wild variety, the second fermentation, malolactic, is also just as important. An aging of 12-18 months depending on the vintage, starts in Slavonian oak barrels and barriques, giving necessary balance to the wine.

With deep ruby red color. Nose of red berries, tobacco, roses, and white pepper with hints of hay and wild herbs. Full bodied with balanced acidity and alcohol, this wine is sapid and rich with a long finish of black fruits and spices.

Don Chisciotte Fiano d’Avellino 2010  $13/gls
Italy | Campania | Irpinia Highlands | Avellino | Calitri

This wine is a an unusual take on one of this region’s most promising indigenous white varieties from the father-uncle-son team of Michele, Pierluigi and Guido Zampaglione. Made in a natural style; it is organically farmed, with no additions of yeast, enzymes, or chemicals; limited use of sulfur and it’s also fermented on its skins, where it acquires a distinctive golden-orange hue and the classification of an “Orange Wine.”

The taste is fruity, long, lingering and very pleasant with mild residual tannic to clean the mouth and stimulate the drink. With amazing aromatics of nuts, spice, tangerine, apple, and herbs, the palate is fresh and tangy with spicy citrus notes. A bit of tannic grip, with beautiful balance reflects its ability to be a brilliant food companion. Despite its wildness, it is not clumsy or rustic. Expanding one’s imagination, this wine is extremely rare for its style combined with it’s limited availability – only 5,000 cases are produced annually, this is one for the cellar and for those moments when you want something out of the ordinary.

Sallier de la Tour “La Monaca” Syrah 2008  $10/gls
Italy| Sicily | Palermo | Monreale | Pernice Estate

This Syrah, represents the peak of Sallier de la Tour and the realization of a dream which came true, thanks to the strong belief, a deep trust in these lands, and the people working for the project. The estate is at the center of the fertile Jato Valley with vines planted in clay, sandstone, and tufo, along the Sicilian “Strada” for Syrah. The winery itself was a marvel when constructed in 1850 and today, its innovation is still applicable. Built by French architect, De Fry, it was made to store rainwater, manage, and recycle all its grey water.

media_res_08

Made from 100% Syrah from vines planted 20 years ago, the belief and trust in the land has paid off, as one can understand in the depth of character this wine exhibits. With inky-ruby hues, it is expressive. Full-blown aromas of blackberry, smoke, fresh herbs and black pepper. Dense, sweet and spicy, with the hints of fresh herbs joining simple black fruit flavors. Intensely flavored with a finish of good energy and smooth tannins.

Cottanera L’Ardanza

Sicily | Castiglione | Cottanera

Etna itself flows in the lymph of the Cottanera vineyards. With its pioneer viticulture, Cottanera is one of the most extraordinary companies in Italian and international enology today. The vineyards grow over lava stone, 700 mts above the sea, on the northern slope of the volcano, rising and twisting with air of the volcano, becoming the mirror of a unique, precious territory, a fascinating, suggestive land. 100% Mondeuse, a grape typical of Upper Savoy. Ardenza is a very particular rich ruby red wine. One is enchanted from the first smell of its extraordinary, elegant bouquet. Fresh vegetal notes lead on to intense, fruity hints of morello, cherry and blueberry, which blend well with pleasant, fine mineral and spicy scents. Pleasantly creamy on the palate, it is well sustained by dense noble tannins and a pleasing full-bodied taste. Long lasting, persistent aftertaste.

January Featured Winemakers

Throughout January, Luci Ancora & Ristorante Luci will feature two special winemakers

Celestino Gaspari & Elena Fucci

Enjoy “Zyme” Rondinella Blend & “Titolo” Aglianico del Vulture throughout January at Luci Restaurants.

Now, onto the wines…

Zyme Logo

Celestino Gaspari “Zyme” il Bianco “From Black to White” Rondinella Blend 2011

VENETO | SAN PIETRO IN CARINO | VERONA – ITALY

Celestino Gaspari is an emerging Italian wine maker. We first encountered his portfolio last fall at an industry tasting. His wines were some of the most unique and memorable we tasted that day. One white in particular caught our attention. “Zyme,” a fruit forward blend made with familiar and some unheard of varietals. At first taste, it beautifully expressed a union of traditional methods and modern appeal. With notes of peach and juicy pear, slight tones of mint, smoke, and dried flowers, this unique blend of aromas and tastes stood out from the afternoon’s offerings. Comprised of 60% Rondinella Bianca, 15% Traminer, 15% Kerner, and 10% Incorcio Manzoni, these obscure varietals stopped us at the table. It’s not everyday that unique blends composed of obscure varietals come along with this level of quality and precision. We found one of the reasons for this: Gaspari’s wife, Maria Rosa Quintarelli, is the daughter of famous Valpolicella producer, Giuseppe Quintarelli and it is at this estate that Gaspari spent 11 years learning the artistry of Vapolicella production.

fromblacktowhite 90deg

As with food, good wine also begins with the best ingredients – in this case, the best juice. It comes as little surprise that Gaspari studied agronomy from a very young age. Using this knowledge, has has gained notable experience through the birth and growth of ten area wineries. It is through the wines from Zyme, that one can experience the history of Gaspari’s viniviticulture expertise and dedication to not only producing beautiful wines, but also quality grapes. “Zýmē is home to young men and women who are forward-looking, pro-active, and committed, and who grow professionally in synergy with the grapevines they tend.” Perfect as an aperitif, with fish or earthy risotto dishes. Available through January at Luci Restaurants for $9/glass.

elena-fucci

Elena Fucci “Titolo” Aglianico del Vulture 2010

BASILICATA  | BARILE (POTENZA) – ITALY

On the outskirts of Barile, in the North of Basilicata, immersed between vineyard and olive groves, it is here that the Fucci Family produces the historic Aglianico. This black grape varietal with a long history beginning in Greece and stretching into the Roman empire, has character reminiscent of Barolo. Often called the “Barolo of the South,” Elena Fucci’s work with these grapes offers hints of tobacco, spice, and vanilla alongside ethereal spices of cherry, blackberry preserves, and rosemary. Once a key component to Falernian wine of the Roman Empire, today, Aglianico remains present in the vineyards of the South. Working with passion to improve the characteristics of this unmistakable and unique wine, Elena’s education and experience offers a glimpse into the past while offering place and future for Aglianico.

 Aglianico_del_Vulture_TITOLO90deg

Dark and intense ruby red with an ample and complex nose, Titolo is dry on the palate and full bodied with firm tannins and a long finish. Although a young wine when released, it is destined for a great future! $12/glass $58/btl
